Top 5 Things to Do in Tokyo
Tokyo is a huge city with so much to see and do. There are a lot of unique experiences here, you’ll have an amazing trip really no matter what you do! Here’s my opinion of the top 5 things you must do in Tokyo.
Sumo Show
This was hands-down one of our favorite experiences in Japan! The coolest part wasn’t just watching the sumo wrestlers, it was watching the audience try to take them on. My husband literally beat one (I’m still shocked).
You’ll learn about the history of sumo, their lifestyle, how much they eat, and then they put on a show before letting the audience jump in. It’s such a fun, unique experience and I recommend it to anyone, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
Some sumo shows include a traditional chanko-nabe meal (the stew sumos eat daily), but we booked too late and missed those tickets. I’d highly recommend booking 2–3 months in advance!
Shinjuku City
You have to experience the nightlife in Shinjuku. This area is vibrant, neon-filled, chaotic in the best way, it’s the perfect place to see those iconic bright Tokyo lights. You’ll honestly feel like you walked into the set of Fast & Furious 7.
Run around the streets, grab a drink, play some games in the arcades but beware, the claw machines are extremely addicting.
Just stay aware of your surroundings, it’s a party hub, and we were approached by a few sketchy people. Nothing crazy, just be smart.
Senso-ji Temple
One of the prettiest temples in Tokyo! We visited at night, and it was absolutely magical, the vibrant red architecture glowing under the lights is such a vibe.
Definitely try at least one temple tradition here, whether it’s pulling a fortune or cleansing at the purification fountain. It just makes the experience feel even more special.
Tokyo Skytree (or Shibuya Sky)
We love hitting a lookout deck in every big city, and Tokyo Skytree was so easy and worth it. We booked a sunset slot, watched the sky change colors, and then saw the city sparkle at night. The views are incredible!
Buy your ticket in advance and try to go 30–45 minutes before sunset so you have plenty of time to get up there. The line moved super fast when we went. There are drinks and snacks at the top too, just not a ton of seating.
Shibuya Sky is another amazing option, but tickets were completely sold out during our visit.
TeamLab Planets
This interactive art museum is such a cool experience. You basically walk through three different immersive “worlds”, garden, water, and forest. The water exhibit was our favorite, and one room literally felt like walking through a galaxy (very Interstellar vibes).
You could spend hours wandering around here, and I’d plan for at least 2 hours minimum. The forest section is the most interactive and great for kids, there were trampolines, colorful climbing structures, and tons of sensory moments. Yes, it’s a lot of stimulation, but it’s fun, unique, and you’ll get amazing photos.
Bonus for Cherry Blossom Season: Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
If you’re visiting Tokyo during cherry blossom season, this park is a must. There’s a small entry fee, but it’s so worth it. The park is massive with endless cherry blossom trees, ponds, walking paths, and plenty of spots to relax and soak it all in.
Even outside of cherry blossom season, it’s a beautiful escape from the city and a great place to slow down.
Tokyo is full of life, beauty, good food, kind people, and culture. There’s something for everyone here. I hope these top experiences help you plan a fun, memorable trip to Tokyo. Traveling to other parts of Japan? Check out my 10 Day Japan Itinerary blog!
