Top Things to Do and See in London

London is a huge city and choosing what to do and see can seem overwhelming. I’m going to share with you all the must do’s and see’s in London. I spent 5 days exploring London in spring of 2024 with my best friend and it was a wonderful experience. The city felt safe, it was easy to get around, and there’s truly so much to do and see. I loved getting to witness in person some of the most iconic spots in London.

London Eye: Iconic Views Over the City

Located in the heart of London, the London Eye is the iconic ferris wheel that is massive. From the research I did, I heard it’s not quite worth actually riding it but definitely worth seeing! Plus it’s nearby Big Ben so this is where you easily knock out two birds with one stone!

Big Ben & Westminster: London’s Most Recognizable Landmark

Obviously one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. This whole structure just looks like true royalty. Some popular photo spots are Westminster bridge, Parliament Square, and right by the river (where I chose to get some pics). You can also get great pics of the London eye this way too. If you go towards the top of the hour you can hear the clock chime.

Buckingham Palace: Royal Traditions & Changing of the Guard

Buckingham Palace is the residence of the British Monarch since Queen Victoria. The palace is massive and stunning. I highly recommend going during the changing of the guards which happens Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:45am. I’d come around 30 minutes before to get a good spot. It lasts around a half hour, it’s definitely something really unique and cool to see! Plus it’s free!

If you want to tour inside the palace, it’s only open for a few weeks during the summer. I only saw the outside and it’s definitely a must see, at least once.

Afternoon Tea: English Tradition

The afternoon tea culture in England is huge so I definitely say you have to do it at least once! The tea, sandwiches, and desserts are fabulous and many places put so much effort and thought into the afternoon tea experience. It’s hard to go wrong when choosing a spot! I went to Lanesborough and Sketch, both have their own unique vibe and both were wonderful experiences! Check out my blog to get the inside scoop of each place and other popular afternoon tea spots!

Tower Bridge (Often Mistaken for London Bridge!)

Another one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Commonly mistaken for the London Bridge which is actually a pretty plain bridge, tower bridge is massive and the bright blue and white makes it stand out. Definitely worth getting some photos, a few good spots are the South Bank near City Hall, Butler’s Wharf Pier, and Tower of London moat area.

You can also walk on the bridge right next to where cars are driving and you can also walk through the glass floor walkways which I did not do. You would have to buy a ticket for that. I think just walking on the bridge for free is good enough! Also in this area you’ll spot Tower of London which is an historic castle, I honestly had no idea it was there before heading to the bridge! From the outside it’s beautiful. You can take a tour and I’m sure learn a lot about the history but that would take up a few hours.

Notting Hill: Pastel Streets, Markets & Movie Moments

Notting Hill is known for the colorful houses, charming streets, and Portobello Road Market. You’ll come across so many unique finds at this market from art, decor, clothes, shoes, kitchen equipment, anything you can think of is here. The best time for the market is on Saturdays. You definitely have to wonder around the streets and get iconic photos of the beautiful colorful homes. Just remember to be respectful as people do live here.

Rooftop - Sky Garden: How to Book Free Tickets

I always a good roof top or going to one of the tallest buildings in cities to get 360 views. I would highly recommend going to Sky Garden, you can get free tickets that come out 3 weeks in advance, to get these you really have to be on top of it! I missed this info but we decided to book a late lunch at one of their restaurants, which got us access to Sky Garden. So if you do miss out, no worries! Just book a reservation at one of their restaurants.

The views from Sky Garden are amazing and you can also see the Shard, a super cool building near the bridge.

Natural History Museum: Stunning Architecture & Free Entry

If you need a break from shopping, site seeing, and food, this museum is a great place to go. The Natural Museum houses over 80 million specimens, including dinosaurs, gemstones, and prehistoric fossils. It’s also free! However you can pay to skip the line but I don’t think it’s worth it. The line does go fast. This is a good spot to pair with the Victoria and Albert Museum which is nearby. I spent about an hour roaming around but you could definitely spend more time here.
