How Many Days Do You Need in Croatia? Split & Dubrovnik Guide

We spent about 9 days between Split and Dubrovnik and honestly, it felt like the perfect amount of time.

In this guide, I’m breaking down how long you actually need in each place depending on your travel style, plus what I would prioritize if you’re on a tighter schedule vs. taking things slower.

How Many Days Do You Need in Split?

Split is amazing, but the real highlight here is the islands. You could easily spend a full week island hopping and still not see everything.

That said, most people don’t have endless amounts of travel days, so here’s a few different options and what you can see in that amount of time.

3 Days in Split (Minimum Time)

If you only have 3 full days in Split, I’d prioritize getting out on the water as much as possible. Check out my guide to island hopping in Split.

  • Day 1: Full-day boat tour (group or private)

  • Day 2: Ferry to an island (Hvar, Brač, or Šolta)

  • Day 3: Explore Split Old Town + beach time

For your island day:

  • Hvarbest for beach clubs and a lively vibe

  • Brač better beaches

  • Šoltamore quiet and relaxing

You could even split your day between Brač and Šolta since they’re so close together.

On your final day, spend the morning wandering Old Town, Diocletian’s Palace, the cathedral, and the bell tower. You only need a few hours here. Then either relax at a beach in Split or take a short ferry for better beaches.

4 Days in Split (Best Balance)

With one extra day, you have two great options:

  • Option 1: Visit Krka National Park (waterfalls + nature)

  • Option 2: Add another island/boat day

Krka will take about half a day to most of the day depending on how you do it, and you’ll probably want a slower evening afterward. Check out my blog on Krka National Falls, is it still worth it?

If you’re more into scenery and nature, go with Krka. If you’re more into the water and beaches, choose another island day.

5 Days in Split (More Relaxed + Variety)

This is how long we stayed, and it gave us a really nice mix of everything.

Here’s how I’d ideally structure 5 days:

  • 1 full boat day

  • 1 day at Krka National Park

  • 1 day at a Hvar beach club

  • 1 day exploring Brač (best beaches)

  • 1 day split between Old Town + a relaxing island like Šolta

One thing I’ll say, driving far for beaches (like we did to Omiš) isn’t really necessary. The islands are where Croatia really shines.

My honest take:

  • Minimum: 3 days

  • Ideal: 4–5 days

How Many Days Do You Need in Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik is smaller and more compact than Split, so you don’t need as much time here.

There’s still plenty to do, but overall, fewer islands and activities compared to Split.

2 Days in Dubrovnik (Fast-Paced Trip)

If you’re short on time, you can still see a lot in 2 days.

Day 1:

  • Kayaking tour (Lokrum Island + Betina Cave)

  • Evening in Old Town

  • Sunset at Buža Beach Bar

Day 2:

  • Cliff jumping or relaxing at Buža Beach Bar

  • Beach time at Banje Beach

  • Walk the Dubrovnik Walls (late afternoon/early evening)

  • Dinner in Old Town

It’ll be a busy couple of days, but very doable.

3 Days in Dubrovnik (Perfect Amount of Time)

This is exactly how long we spent, and it felt like the sweet spot.

With an extra day, I’d add:

  • A boat day to the Elaphiti Islands (group tour, ferry, or private depending on budget)

This gives you time to explore, do excursions, and still relax a bit. If you’re wondering what else to do in Dubrovnik, check out my top things to do here.

4 Days in Dubrovnik (More Exploring + Flexibility)

With 4 days, you can slow things down and add something extra:

  • Another boat day (smaller group or private)
    or

  • A day trip to Montenegro

At this point, you’ll have plenty of time to see everything without feeling rushed.

Split vs Dubrovnik Time Breakdown

I know we’d all love unlimited travel time, but realistically, most trips are limited.

Here’s what I’d recommend for a first trip to Croatia:

  • 10 Days Total:

    • 4 days in Split

    • 3 days in Dubrovnik

    • (plus travel days)

  • 1 Week Trip:

    • 3 days in Split

    • 2 days in Dubrovnik

If you take anything away from this, prioritize time on the water in Split. The islands are the best part of Croatia, and that’s where your trip will really stand out. Check out my 10 day travel guide to Croatia blog.
