Is Oia Worth It? Where to Stay in Santorini for Every Traveler
One of the most common questions I hear about Santorini is: Is Oia really worth staying in? And honestly, it depends on the kind of traveler you are.
When most people picture Santorini, they’re picturing Oia - the iconic whitewashed buildings cascading down the cliffs, blue domes, and those unreal sunset views over the caldera. But Santorini is so much more than just Oia. You also have Fira (the second most popular town), Imerovigli (a quieter, romantic middle ground), and even more laid-back villages in the south.
Why I Recommend Splitting Your Stay
We started our trip (and our honeymoon) with 3 nights in a more peaceful, remote area near Imerovigli. I wanted somewhere beautiful, relaxing, and a bit more affordable where we could ease into the trip.
We stayed at Lithi Luxury Retreat, and it was everything we hoped for, immaculate room, private infinity pool, incredible views, and the kind of breakfast you actually look forward to waking up for. It felt luxurious without the Oia price tag.
That said, it is more on the remote side. It’s not the best if you want to be constantly out exploring, since transportation can be a bit limited, but for a slow, romantic start, it was perfect. We relied on taxis arranged through the hotel, which made things easy.
Then we transitioned into Oia for the final 2 nights, and that’s when the experience completely shifted.
Oia: Is It Worth It?
In my opinion… yes, but with a few caveats.
Oia is one of those places that truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime destination. The views are unreal, the sunsets are magical, and walking through the quiet streets early in the morning honestly feels like you’re in a movie.
We stayed in an Airbnb with a hot tub, breakfast, and insane views, and yes, it was about $500 a night!. It’s definitely a splurge. But for 1–2 nights, I personally think it’s worth it since it is more of a once-in-a-lifetime spot.
What makes staying in Oia different from just visiting is the timing. Early mornings and late evenings are when Oia is at its best. Before the crowds arrive, you can wander the streets in near silence, soak in the views, and actually enjoy those famous photo spots without long lines. At night, everything lights up and feels incredibly romantic.
During the day though? It’s packed. Like shoulder-to-shoulder in some areas. And it does take away from the magic a bit.
That contrast is exactly why staying overnight is so special, you get to experience both sides.
What We Loved Doing in Oia
One of my favorite spots was Amoudi Bay, crystal clear water, cliff jumping, and a totally different vibe from the main town. It’s a great escape when Oia feels overwhelming.
We also loved:
Sunset dinners overlooking the caldera
Wandering the narrow streets and finding hidden viewpoints
Seeing the town light up at night (so underrated)
How Long Should You Stay in Oia?
I think 1–2 nights is the sweet spot.
Anything longer, and you might start to feel like you’ve run out of things to do, especially considering the price. Oia is more about soaking it all in than filling your itinerary.
What About Fira?
If Oia feels out of budget, Fira is a great alternative.
It still gives you those classic Santorini views, whitewashed buildings, caldera cliffs, beautiful sunsets, but at a more affordable price point. It’s also much more central and convenient for activities like:
Boat tours
Winery visits
Restaurants and nightlife
Fira has more energy, more options, and is easier to navigate, especially if you don’t want to rely on taxis as much.
So… Where Should You Stay?
Here’s how I’d break it down:
Stay in Oia (1–2 nights) if you’re on your honeymoon, celebrating something special, or just want that iconic Santorini experience at least once
Stay in Imerovigli if you want something quieter, romantic, and slightly more affordable with incredible views
Stay in Fira if you want convenience, better pricing, and easy access to tours, restaurants, and nightlife
Day trip to Oia if you’re on a tighter budget, you’ll still get the views and experience, just with more crowds
Final Thoughts
Oia is worth it, but not necessarily for your entire stay.
For me, the magic of Santorini was in experiencing both sides: the quiet, slow mornings in a peaceful retreat and the iconic, breathtaking moments in Oia.
If you can swing it, do both. It gives you the best of everything, and makes the experience feel even more special.
