Tuscany Honeymoon Guide: The Perfect Romantic Itinerary

Tuscany is one of the most romantic, peaceful places in the world. Italy is already big on romance, but Tuscany feels like the heart of it all, rolling hills, endless nature, perfect scenery, and that slow, in-love-with-life energy.

We weren’t technically on our honeymoon when we visited Tuscany, but it honestly felt like we were. We spent 3 days here during our 2-week Italy trip, and it ended up being one of the most romantic parts of the entire vacation. If you want your honeymoon to feel like a fairytale, keep reading.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle into the Countryside

Tuscany may or may not be your first stop in Italy. Either way, you’ll likely be driving in, either from another city or from the airport.

You 100% need a car in Tuscany. Public transportation isn’t reliable in the countryside, many villas sit down gravel roads, and honestly, having your own car adds to the romance. It gives you flexibility, privacy, and the freedom to explore at your own pace, which is exactly what you want on your honeymoon.

Where to Stay

I highly recommend staying in the countryside rather than directly in towns like Pienza, Siena, or Montepulciano. Visit those towns during the day, but stay tucked away in the rolling hills for that true fairytale moment.

We stayed at a beautiful countryside villa that had:

  • Unreal views of the Tuscan hills

  • A pool overlooking vineyards

  • An on-site restaurant where we had breakfast every morning

  • Dinner reservations available on property

  • Their own wine

  • The most amazing charcuterie boards on request

The service was incredible. If your property offers a honeymoon suite, book it.

After checking in, take advantage of your surroundings. This is your honeymoon. Relax. Sit by the pool. Drink wine. Take in the views. Slow down.

If you’re feeling ready to explore, head to a nearby medieval village for dinner and wander the streets after with gelato in hand. One night we had dinner in Monticchiello, tiny, quiet, and incredibly charming. It felt like we had stepped into another century.

Day 2: Wine Tastings and Medieval Towns

If you’re honeymooning in Tuscany, I’m assuming you enjoy wine, and this is the place for it.

Morning: Montalcino

Our first wine tasting was in Montalcino at Il Palazzone. It was about a 45-minute drive from our villa, but the drive itself was magical, rolling green hills, cypress trees lining the roads, and medieval towns in the distance.

At Il Palazzone, we toured the vineyards, learned about their history and production process, explored the massive barrels, and then enjoyed a private tasting. Montalcino is known for Brunello wine, and it was delicious.

Wine tastings in Tuscany are often very affordable, and sometimes complimentary if you purchase bottles (which you absolutely should). Many wineries ship directly home, so no need to carry bottles around your entire trip.

We were the only two people there during our tasting. It was peaceful, personal, and so romantic.

Afterward, explore the town of Montalcino and grab lunch before heading to your next stop.

Afternoon: Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a must-visit medieval town, even if you don’t do a tasting here. When you picture the perfect Tuscan village, this is probably what you’re imagining.

We did the De’Ricci wine tasting, which takes place in an underground cellar beneath the city. You walk through historic tunnels, learn fascinating stories about the wine and the town, and then head upstairs for the tasting. It’s such a unique experience, completely different from the vineyard setting earlier in the day.

Afterward, wander the streets. Get gelato. Pop into shops. Sit in the main square and people watch. Take in the views.

Fun fact: Montepulciano was featured in Twilight!

Sunset Romance

During our trip, we had just gotten engaged, so I booked an engagement photoshoot with a local photographer I found on Instagram. It was one of the best decisions we made. We visited several incredible landscape spots and captured some of the most beautiful views in Tuscany.

If you’re newly married and don’t want more photos (totally fair), plan a sunset picnic instead. This is peak honeymoon energy.

Grab:

  • A blanket

  • Local cheeses and cured meats

  • Fresh bread

  • A bottle of Tuscan wine

Find a quiet overlook and watch the sun set over the hills. It’s simple, intimate, and unforgettable.

If you prefer something more planned, I love booking experiences through Get Your Guide, they offer organized picnic options so you don’t have to coordinate everything yourself.

Day 3: Thermal Spa and Pienza

Start your morning at one of Tuscany’s thermal spas.

The most famous is Terme di Saturnia, known for its natural cascading waterfalls. It’s stunning, but it can be a bit of a drive depending on where you’re staying.

We chose Bagno Vignoni because it was closer to our villa. It’s smaller and less dramatic than Saturnia, but still beautiful and relaxing. Go early if you want to avoid crowds.

Afterward, either head back to your villa to freshen up or bring a change of clothes in the car (which is what we did).

Lunch in Pienza

Next, drive to Pienza, one of my favorite towns in Tuscany, especially for the views.

We had lunch at La Terrazza del Chiostro, which overlooks Val d’Orcia. The views alone make it worth it.

After lunch, wander through town, browse the small shops, and visit Palazzo Piccolomini. Pienza feels romantic without being overwhelming.

Final Tuscan Evening

For your last night, head back to your villa and soak it all in. Open a bottle of wine. Watch the sunset. Enjoy dinner on property if it’s available.

One of the best things to do in Tuscany is simply relax and appreciate it, the scenery, the food, the wine, the stillness. That’s why I truly believe you should splurge on your accommodation here. You’ll spend more time at your villa in Tuscany than anywhere else in Italy, so make it special.

Day 4: Travel Day (Optional Stop)

Wake up slowly. Have coffee. Watch the sunrise over the hills.

If you’re heading to Florence next, consider stopping in Monteriggioni along the way. It’s a tiny walled medieval town known for its defensive towers built to protect Siena from Florence. You can walk along the walls and enjoy views over the Chianti region, and stop for a glass of Chianti before moving on.

Other Romantic Italy Honeymoon Destinations

If you’re planning a 10–14 day honeymoon, here are a few destinations that pair beautifully with Tuscany:

Positano (Amalfi Coast)

We started our trip in Positano and it was absolutely stunning. A colorful hillside town cascading into the sea, it’s romantic, picturesque, and perfect for beach days and sunset dinners.

If your budget allows, add Capri for an even more luxurious experience. I’d recommend 3–4 nights in Positano or along the Amalfi Coast.

Lake Como

I haven’t been yet, but Lake Como gives major honeymoon energy. Elegant villas, dramatic mountain backdrops, and serene lake views. I’d plan 2–3 nights here.

Venice

Yes, it’s cliché, but for good reason. Venice feels undeniably romantic. A private canal ride, candlelit dinners, wandering quiet alleyways… it would be such a dreamy honeymoon add-on. From what I’ve researched, 1–2 nights would be perfect.

The Perfect Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

Tuscany + Amalfi Coast + Lake Como or Venice would make for an incredible 10–14 day honeymoon in Italy.

If you have more time, I’d absolutely add Florence. It’s busier than the countryside, but it’s beautiful, historic, and full of art and culture.

Tuscany is where you slow down. Where you soak it in. Where you feel like you’re living inside a romance movie.

And honestly… that’s exactly what you want on your honeymoon.
